In a study published in the British Medical Journal, it was observed that people who consumed a greater number of artificial sweeteners had an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, including stroke, in comparison to non-consumers. The researchers noted that aspartame intake was associated with an increased risk of cerebrovascular events, while acesulfame potassium and sucralose were associated with increased coronary heart disease.

The prospective study was launched in May 2009 to investigate the relationship between nutrition and health. In the study, dietary intake and consumption of artificial sweeteners were assessed by repeating a 24-hour dietary record. Other factors that may potentially influence health, such as lifestyle, demographics, etc., were also taken into account. The findings of the study showed that a total of 37% of the participants consumed artificial sweeteners in the range of 42.46 mg/day approximately. Also, when compared with non-consumers, the consumers of artificial sweeteners were found to be young, with a higher Body Mass Index, a less physically active lifestyle, and more likely to smoke and follow a weight loss diet. The consumers also had lower total energy intake, lower alcohol, saturated and polyunsaturated fat levels, along with a higher intake of sodium, red and processed meat, dairy products, etc.

Over a period of nine years of follow-up, 1,502 cardiovascular events were reported, which included heart attack, angina, angioplasty, stroke, etc. The rate of occurrence of cerebrovascular disease was reported as 190 and 150 per 100,000 individuals in the consumer and non-consumer groups, respectively.
